We know how important it is for people to be active, and the particular role tennis can have in the physical and mental wellbeing of those that play it. By its very nature, tennis is an activity whereby close person to person contact can be avoided, with the UK Government saying tennis is a good example of an activity that can be undertaken in a way compliant with social distancing restrictions.
UPDATE – New Tier 4 Restrictions
The Government has this afternoon (19 December) announced new Tier 4 restrictions will be introduced in parts of England from 00:01 tonight. We have been in discussion with DCMS to get confirmation of exactly what this means for tennis and can confirm the following for Tier 4 areas:
- Indoor courts, gyms and sports facilities will need to close
- Outdoor tennis courts can remain open for individual exercise, and for people to use with others within your household, support bubble, or with one person from another household. One-to-one coaching outdoors is therefore also permitted
- Organised outdoor sport for under 18s and disabled people will be allowed to continue in larger numbers
In, terms of elite tennis, the Government has confirmed that elite sport can continue in line with the strict protocols and measures that are in place for it, as it did during the previous lockdown. Events such as the scheduled ‘Battle of the Brits Premier League of Tennis’ are therefore able to continue as previously announced.
We have now updated the summary grid of tennis activity by tier to reflect the above information and cover Tier 4. The full LTA Covid-19 Secure guidance documents will be updated in due course once we have confirmation of further details from Government.
The full list of which areas are in which tier is provided on the Government website, and you can also use the postcode checker via the link below.
Regional Tiers – Full Guidance Documents & Summary Grid (19 December)
Following the introduction of a system of tiered restrictions and the addition of Tier 4 restrictions announced on 19 December, the LTA has developed a summary grid of what tennis activity can take place under each of the four tiers of restrictions based on our continued discussions with the Government and the information it has published. The grid provides information covering outdoor tennis, indoor tennis, travel and facilities,
The summary grid complements the full LTA Covid-19 Secure guidance documents for tennis venues, coaches, officials and players which can all be downloaded below – they detail all protocols, procedures and information needed to for activity to take place safely and in line with Government guidelines, covering more general things applicable not just to tennis, such as toilet and changing room use. These documents will be updated to cover the new Tier 4 restrictions as soon as possible once we have confirmation of further details from Government.
